ultrasound In its latest revision since 2000, the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is now available from the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS). The document defines the scope of practice and clinical standards for diagnostic medical sonographers and describes their role as members of the healthcare team.

Addressing the critical importance of sonographer certification and the wide-range of clinical environments where sonographers practice, the document also recognizes that federal and state laws, accreditation standards, and lawful facility policies and procedures may supersede the document’s standards.

Through a collaborative process, unrestricted dialogue, and exchange of ideas, representatives from 16 organizations began revising the existing text in 2013.

Organizations that participated in the revision include:

  • American College of Radiology
  • American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
  • American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine
  • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
  • American Society of Echocardiography
