The American Society of Radiologic Technologists Board of Directors recently announced the recipients of the 2009 Legislative Advocacy Award, presented to two individuals who were chosen for their dedication to quality medical imaging and support of the CARE bill.

This year’s winners are California Rep. Xavier Becerra and Montana Sen. Max Baucus.

Becerra, who represents California’s 31st District, is a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means and sits on its Subcommittee on Health. He advocated for a key proponent for the inclusion of medical imaging quality provisions dealing with facility accreditation in the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008.

The chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Baucus was the primary sponsor and author of the legislation that evolved into the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act, including medical imaging provisions in all versions of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program legislation. He also sponsored legislation that would mandate Medicare coverage for the use of erythropoietin stimulating agents in cancer and related neoplastic conditions.

Becerra and Baucus will honored in an April 21 ceremony during the R.T. in D.C. advocacy event in Washington, D.C.
